Account Management Intern - Elizabeth E.

On value-based, project work while interning at Cummins…

“My internship project work was very interesting and challenging, which is always exciting for me, as I enjoy the motivation of new work. I was able to develop a marketing plan for a major customer account, which led to forecasting the overall light-duty truck market for the next six months to one year.  I created a template for account teams to track the status of the relationship with the customer included data metrics for accounts receivable, forecast accuracy and bias, figures, etc. The intent was to roll all scores up to a summary level to show total account health.  I was able to work through 150 leading indicators using electronic tool software to find a smaller subset of the most important indicators, which my team will track moving forward.

I was surprised by the scope of work assigned to me during my internship, as my projects were value-based and will be utilized by the company in future. It’s refreshing to be trusted with work that is very important. ”

On accomplishing your goals and the Cummins culture…

“I worked very closely with my marketing and account management business team to complete each project over the course of my internship. I felt much support and appreciation from the management team, as the culture at Cummins was inviting and approachable for interns. Everyone on my marketing team worked very closely together and supported each other to accomplish tasks - very much like a family!”

On experiencing technology and innovation…

“I touched on new technology through the use of our forecast predicting software tool.  It’s somewhat new and still in a manual state with the intent to automate. I was able to work within and see how we can utilize data through this new, innovative tool that is available to us for predicting market conditions.”

On impacting the customer…

“My main project impacted our customer by allowing them to better understand their market and make the best decisions possible.  I participated in a Net Promotor Score (NPS) workshop to capture our customer’s concerns leading up to the product launch.  Emphasis was placed on ensuring Cummins has no resource gaps, allowing us to react quickly to our customer’s needs, which was a very valuable experience to walk away with from my internship.”

On company and community involvement…

“I really benefited from attending and getting involved in the Women’s Affinity Group (WAG) speed mentoring event.  It was really interesting to have the opportunity to meet and speak with so many women who have held a variety of management and leadership roles across the company. Listening to their experiences and sharing their stories was a highlight of my summer!”

On the benefits from your internship…

“I learned that people have different leadership styles through the way they interact and adapt to others. Everyone’s style can be different and actually helps by bringing diverse perspectives to the table, which ensures better results.  When working for a global company like Cummins, it allows you to work with colleagues from around the world.  This opens up cultural learning opportunities, which benefited my overall experience.”

On what you enjoyed most about working at Cummins…

“The people.  Those that are well ingrained in the company and exhibit the values of the company affected my overall experience.  People here are very welcoming and want to help others succeed!”

On Working Right at Cummins…

“Being involved in the company and community outside of just day-to-day work really showed me what it means to be Working Right.  I was encouraged to get involved, so I supported the planning of ‘Take Your Child to Work Day’ and the Cummins Emission Solutions company picnic.  Cummins strives to make an impact in the work we do, not just for our products and customers, but the communities in which we live.”
