Intern Highlight: Christine A., Global Liaison Engineering Intern

On value-based, project work while interning at Cummins…

“This has been the third internship that I’ve completed with Cummins Inc., and each experience continues to build upon my knowledge of the engineering function. My focus this summer was on a front end accessory drive project, which allowed me to use ADAP to update our database to include key information on various accessories, such as water pumps, alternators, etc. My time spent on this project will eventually enable employees all around the world to access this database to aid in their work.

An equally important project that I focused on this summer was reworking an existing capability assessment tool. The tool had previously been very complicated and hard to use internally. Through my work, I was able to simplify and streamline the tool to make it easier to use. I worked cross functionally with many groups within Cummins to validate my changes and ensure they were working correctly and efficiently.

In addition to my project work, I enjoyed collaborating with new interns and employees, as well as reconnecting with employees and interns from my previous internships within the Company. Staying connected and developing relationships with multiple teams has been really beneficial for me.”

On accomplishing your goals and the Cummins culture…

“Here at Cummins, people are always willing to provide helpful feedback on my projects and guidance in identifying a solution. My team members were available to answer any questions and provide direction when needed. Overall, I’d say the culture is very friendly and welcoming. People are open and willing to share their personal experiences and knowledge they have gained while working at Cummins and within the industry. Also, it’s nice to see Cummins giving back to the community and encouraging people to be active. This clearly coincides with their values and what it means to be Working Right.”

On experiencing technology and innovation…

“I’ve had the opportunity to tour the Cummins Rocky Mount Engine Plant (RMEP) located in North Carolina, and I was able to discuss with manufacturing engineers how the assembly was completed and what processes were most important. This tour gave me access to seeing innovation through one of our manufacturing production sites. The product alone is technology leading and having the experience to see it produced in person is very profound!”

On impacting the customer…

“Bringing a fresh approach to my assessment tool project allowed significant improvements for our employees and ultimately our customers.  Taking a fresh, diverse approach allowed me to make changes that improved the quality level, which was impactful for all parties.”

On company and community involvement…

“I experienced firsthand the importance and value Cummins places on making positive change in our communities and the environment. Cummins had a Recycle Day to bring attention to employees and the community on safely and efficiently recycling materials that people no longer need. It was very inspiring to see the reach Cummins has not only in Columbus, Indiana but globally.”

On the benefits from your internship…

“I’ve gained more confidence in my abilities by completing this internship at Cummins. I know the work I completed was important and impactful to the company, which has given me more confidence for my future professional accomplishments.

A validating moment for me in completing my internships at Cummins was seeing my college course work come to life in my projects. My front end accessory drive project benefited from the knowledge I gained in my electrical engineering course.  My mechanical engineering design courses were for my assessment tool project.  It was interesting to see several processes that I was taught in school utilized in my Cummins internship.”
