Line HR Intern - Lauren R.

On value-based, project work while interning at Cummins…

“My main internship project focused on looking for efficiencies in the internal recruiting process for the Cummins Turbo Technologies (CTT) business. I developed a process map using Six Sigma tools to layout the current process. With the support from our Six Sigma Black Belt and team, I was able to prioritize the inputs. I then completed a Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify key failure modes while collaborating with line Human Resource (HR) members from other business units within Cummins. I created an action plan to address all the failures found from completing my FMEA. Finally, I produced a PowerPoint training for employees to use in the future, which will reduce the amount of time it takes to hire future employees.

I also put my project management and problem solving skills to much use throughout my internship.  I found that my business courses really helped prepare me to work in a professional work environment.  My classes set a high expectation for delivering quality work, which is very similar to working at Cummins.”

On accomplishing your goals and the Cummins culture…

“Here at Cummins, people really want to see you succeed. My manager made sure we had regular conversations about developing my skills and setting my career goals. The culture at Cummins is very open and diverse. It was great to have the opportunity to meet so many people from very different backgrounds and experiences. Everybody strives to implement the Cummins Core Values in their daily work - especially, integrity.  Cummins is always looking to make sure employees do what is right and do what they say they are going to do!”

On experiencing technology and innovation…

“As an HR intern, I was continuously focused on innovative, improvement processes that concentrated on gaining the best and brightest talent. This experience showed me how Cummins pays close attention to attracting and retaining the best and brightest talent. Also, I was able to see how human resources at Cummins partners with each business unit to find top candidates. This allowed me to interact with the business on a close level.”

On company and community involvement…

“Cummins approves and promotes all employees to dedicate at least four hours per year to support local community efforts for improvement. I had the opportunity to connect with other Cummins interns and employees, as we helped prep the fairgrounds for the Bartholomew County Fair. This event really showed me how Cummins strives to have a positive impact in the community.”

On the benefits from your internship…

“I got to see firsthand what a career in HR really looks like as a full-time professional, and solidified my interest in pursuing an HR career. This summer I gained more knowledge about my field of interest, and I learned a lot from my team members who supported me during my internship. Furthermore, I have built great relationships with my team members and colleagues, which certainly will continue to grow in the future.”

On what you enjoyed most about working at Cummins…

“My manager was definitely a highlight of working at Cummins. The expectations that were set for me were always very transparent, as well as my ongoing development throughout my internship.”

On Working Right at Cummins…

“For me, Working Right is when Cummins Leadership takes the time to meet and connect with the summer interns during the Executive Speaker Series. One thing that stuck out to me from the Executive Speaker Series was Vice President and President of Components, Tracey Embry. She encouraged all interns to “take on the hard stuff”. This inspired me to continue to take on and solve challenges at work.

.Update: Following Lauren's internship, she has accepted a second internship at Cummins Inc
