Marketing Communications Intern - Sunny S.

On value-based, project work while interning at Cummins…

“Working at Cummins was really enjoyable, as interns are respected and treated like full-time employees. I was assigned several important projects during the course of my internship and was given support to ensure I completed them successfully. I had access to senior leaders, who provided input through sharing their experiences and background. Cummins truly is a global and diverse company.

A meaningful project I supported was for a joint venture partner based in China. It allowed me to highlight my own cultural experiences through my communication skills in Mandarin, which quickly benefited the team and project. This particular joint venture partnership is very important to Cummins, so being trusted as a key interface point between the Columbus based team and China based team was very exciting. Other projects I focused on during my internship was analyzing and reporting Cummins Care Data. My work was impactful, as it was published and reviewed by several Marketing teams across many business units.

Cummins really values their interns and puts a lot of effort into making sure the internship is valuable. Part of that value can be seen in the Executive Speaker Series, in which all interns were able to see Tom Linebarger, Chief Executive Officer, speak on his experiences and give advice on how to make the most of our time at Cummins. I even had the opportunity to ask him a question about Cummins embracing diversity!  He stressed the importance of finding diverse experience when working towards a goal and how it provides great opportunities for interpersonal development of our employees.”

On accomplishing your goals and the Cummins culture…

“The environment within my team was very open and willing to answer any questions, whether it be pertaining to my projects or career development. I was sure to meet with people throughout the company who were interested in discussing my career plans and sharing their wisdom.

The company is made up people from all over the world, which brings many different perspectives to the work we do.  Everyone I encountered treated others with respect and that is important when much focus is placed on high standards and hitting key goals.”

On experiencing technology and innovation…

“I have to say, experiencing the Engine Familiarization Training was eye opening for me! The two day training gave me hands on experience with the diesel technology our engineering teams design, develop and create every day. I learned about all the components of the engine and took part in a full engine build. Being a liberal arts major, I didn’t have much knowledge of engines, but after taking this course I have a much better understanding of our key products and how it functions in the market place.”

On impacting the customer…

“I was able to interface directly with our joint venture partner. It felt very empowering to hold an internship role, yet feel entrusted to help communicate project intricacies and negotiations.”

On company and community involvement…

“I was involved with our company’s ‘Take Your Kids to Work Day’ this summer.  It was fun to help the kids get a glimpse of what goes on at Cummins and what their parents are doing to make an impact on future technology and in the community. This was just one of many events that really showed the Cummins desire to inspire the next generation.”

On benefits from this internship experience…

“I significantly developed my communications skill set and was able see my college course work put to work in a real world environment. Being able to use my second language of Mandarin to benefit the Company in a business setting was really beneficial and exciting.”

On Working Right at Cummins…

“For me, Working Right is really all about exploring the Cummins values such as Innovation.  I really focused on improving working standards during my projects and became forward thinking. Additionally, I got to see many interns enjoying community involvement events, which really encompassed Working Right.”
