Giuseppe Di Biase Troccoli, Marketing Communications Intern

On value-based, project work while interning at Cummins…

I was lucky enough to participate in the planning one of the biggest press events of this year. The new X15 Engines series was revealed in Columbus, Ohio to more than 40 journalists from all over the world along with our executive leaders. The press release was a 2-day event in the Transportation Research Center, North America’s largest multi-user automotive proving ground. My main responsibility was to organize the logistics for the 2nd day of the event, where all the journalists got to experience the new X15 in 4 different tracks where different features of the X15 were tested. I had the opportunity to work closely with the TRC employees, as well as our Events staff to get all the logistics figured out. This turned out to be a great experience! I got to talk with people from different levels of the organization and was able to present the future products that Cummins will offer in the Heavy Duty On-Highway market.

Besides my main project, I worked on updating and improving Cummins internal training courses, as well as updating the literature for different business units.

On accomplishing your goals and the Cummins culture…

Since my first week at Cummins, my boss and team included me in all of their meetings so I could start gathering information and getting more familiar with our products and marketing strategy. As expected, I started my internship with many questions and my coworkers were very helpful by introducing me to the leaders of our team, teaching me new terms and explaining to me different product traits. I am thankful to have been a part of a team of people that have always a great attitude at work.

Cummins culture can be felt from the Headquarters at the COB to any of the plants around the Cummins campus! I believe it is great that the same culture is visible among the different locations. I also noticed that Cummins has a very diverse culture with people from all over the globe! I believe this is a key quality to have in order to be successful.

On experiencing technology and innovation…

I would have to say the Cummins Engine Plant. I was impressed by how big it is and how technology is used to provide the highest quality products. I’d never been into an engine plant before, people might think that is a dirty and noisy place but in reality, it was very clean, quiet, and safe. It is extraordinary to see the starting point of the assembly line and the last point, where the engines are stored and shipped.

On impacting the customer…

My participation in the launch of the next generation of the heavy-duty on-highway engines was how I impacted the customer during my internship. Here the X15 Performance and Efficiency Series were launched as well as the X12, a groundbreaking engine in the Mid-Bore Market which will be produced in 2018. I am happy that Cummins let me be part of this project, which I know will have a great impact in the years to come for the Marketing and Sales department, as well as the other departments in the company.

On company and community involvement…

I was proud to be involved in the Copa America: Cummins version. It was organized by GOAL (Grupo Organizado de Afinidad Latina) at the end of June while the professional Copa America was being played here in the US. This event was a one-day soccer tournament of 5 teams: Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela and Rest of GOAL members. It was my first Affinity Group event where I was able to meet many Latinos working at Cummins and became friends with all of them. I had so much fun with the people I met during this event.

On the benefits from your internship…

I have learned so much during my summer internship. I was able to meet incredible people, from high-level executives to fellow interns from all over the world. I got the opportunity to work on the Press Event of a new engine which usually doesn’t happen during the summer time. Coming from an engineering background, I have also explored what marketing is and how it is done within Cummins. Outside of the office, I was able to share unique experiences like driving a truck, participate in a charity 5K fitness run, an engine familiarization class, and so much more.

One of the most useful skills I learned during my internship was time management. Time is a limited and valuable resource and you have to make the most out of it! It is important to have your deliverables done on time, just like any project in college. Another important skill I improved on was having attention to detail. This is especially important in marketing, where you need to understand the message you want to deliver, to whom you are delivering it to, and be 100% sure that all your work follows that message. This means that you have to revise your work multiple times to deliver successful results.

On what you enjoyed most about working at Cummins…

I loved the Cummins culture and how it was imitated by all of my coworkers. Since my first day in Columbus, Indiana I noticed how people treated each other with respect and a smile on their face. Besides that, I enjoyed being surrounded by people with diverse cultures and backgrounds. Coming from Venezuela, it made me feel more comfortable to meet and work with a large amount of Latinos and peers from different ethnicities.

The people at Cummins have been open to teaching me more about Cummins, it's customers, products, markets, types of projects, and more. I realized how important is to be working with the right type of people in order for a company to be successful, and the impact it can have in my career. I am glad that I have met all these individuals in such a short amount of time.

On Working Right at Cummins…

For me, Working Right means working ethically, being truthful with your work and representing the company to the highest standards by providing excellent results. In my case, I think my team and I were Working Right during the Press Event. We provided a great impression to the journalists that came to our event. I had the opportunity to individually talk with some of them and had great conversations about Cummins and the work that we do for our customers. It felt good to be a part of a great company like Cummins!
