Overview of Cummins Dr. Lyn Scholarship

Established in 1919, Cummins is the largest independent diesel 
engine maker in the world, with its headquarters in Columbus,
Indiana, USA. As early as 1975, Cummins established business
contact with China. It was one of the first western diesel engine
companies to localize the manufacturing of engines in China, and it
was also the first foreign-invested diesel engine company to
establish a research and development center in China. Cummins is
the largest foreign-invested enterprise in the diesel engine industry
of China, and its accumulated investment has exceeded 1 billion US

Corporate Responsibility is one of Cummins’ six core values. Cummins believes strongly that the Company is

success in business operations, Cummins strictly follows the standards of business conduct, actively shoulders
corporate responsibility and specially focuses on three areas – environment, education and equality of opportunities.

The Dr. Lyn Scholarship was established in 2004, and has become one of the key educational programs of
Cummins China corporate responsibility. The scholarship was named after Dr. Alyn Lyn, the famous Chinese expert
on combustion engineering. Dr. Lyn graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tsinghua
University in 1939. In 1943, Dr. Lyn started his study at King’s College London, where he received his master’s and
doctor’s degrees in engineering. In 1968, Dr. Lyn officially joined Cummins and worked as a senior technical
adviser of research and development engineering. He was afterwards took the position as Vice President in charge
of Cummins’ research and development. After his retirement, Dr. Lyn continued to work as a part-time consultant
for the company till 1990. Dr. Lyn has made great achievements in the research and development of diesel
engines, and enjoys high prestige in the field. He not only has had original ideas about the development of diesel
engines, but also has made significant contributions to Cummins’ development in China.

The Dr. Lyn Scholarship seeks to support excellent female engineering majors who need financial aid, so that
they can successfully complete their studies and gain opportunities for fair competition on the job market. The
recipients of the scholarship are chosen by cooperating universities according to the following standards:

● Female freshman, sophomore or master’s female students majoring in engineering
● Excellence in both academic and behavioral performance
● In need of financial assistance to complete studies

In its early stages of development, the Dr. Lyn Scholarship put an emphasis on providing financial aid. Since
2010, this scholarship program has been providing a great deal of support for students. At its core, the scholarship
program aims to improve students’ competitiveness, and offers help for broadening students’ horizons, cultivate
soft power and enhance practical ability and employment competitiveness through such regular activities as
lectures from high-level managers, technical training, career guidance, visits to Cummins facilities, internship
opportunities. As of 2014, more than 430 students from 13 famous universities—Tsinghua University, Beijing
Institute of Technology, Tientsin University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huazhong
University of Science and Technology, Wuhan University of Technology, Hunan University, Jiangsu University,
Jiangnan University, Chang’an University, University of Science & Technology Beijing, Southwest Petroleum
University—have received financial aid from this scholarship program, with a total funding of RMB 2.19 million. The
Dr. Lyn Scholarship will gradually expand the interaction with students and host various activities both on and off
campus to benefit more students.

In addition to supporting and helping female students majoring in engineering, the Dr. Lyn Scholarship has
also promoted interaction and collaboration between Cummins and universities, greatly promoting development
between the two on common issues of interest. This program reflects Cummins China’s business philosophy: to
contribute to the community and to diversify business operations. It is also a manifestation of Cummins’ commitment
to its core values.
